Why is a standard IBC container not an equivalent tree-watering reservoir

A standard IBC container with a hose or outlet may store water, but it is not designed as a professional irrigation system for mature urban trees usable on streets.

In public-space tree care, several factors matter:

• controlled-release timing, safe placement near pedestrians and traffic,

• usable on slopes (required by tender)

• stability on uneven ground,

• visual integration,

• resistance to vandalism,

• ability to operate in paved tree pits, and

• predictable infiltration into the root zone.

A standard IBC container is primarily an industrial storage and transport container. Available handling and safety instructions for IBCs repeatedly require flat, level, and stable ground, especially for storage, stacking, and safe handling. Therefore, an IBC-based workaround placed in public green spaces, uneven terrain, tree pits, verges, or slopes would require a separate site-specific safety assessment and cannot be treated as automatically equivalent to a purpose-built tree irrigation reservoir designed for use in urban tree-care conditions.

TREEIB® bags are designed specifically for mature and established trees. They release water slowly and predictably over approximately 8–24 hours, depending on the surface and configuration, support deep infiltration into the root zone, and can be used on open soil, grass, paved, gravel, or sand surfaces. They are designed for use on slopes.

Unlike improvised water tanks, TREEIB® is a purpose-built urban tree irrigation system with lockable filling, optional anchoring, optional GPS/security support, serial numbers, repairability, and printable surfaces.

A standard tank-based solution often depends on external valves, taps, hoses, or drip emitters to regulate water flow. In public urban environments, these components create technical vulnerabilities: they may be misadjusted, damaged, clogged, stolen, or vandalized, and they can reduce the practical lifetime of the watering system.

TREEIB® uses a different principle. Its slow release is controlled by calibrated openings integrated into the bag design, avoiding fragile external drip components. This provides a more robust, low-maintenance, and operator-safe solution for municipal tree watering.

Storage, transport, and operational logistics

The logistical difference between rigid containers and flexible irrigation bags becomes significant at the scale required by the tender.

The tender includes approximately 200 reservoirs with capacities above 1,000 liters and 600 reservoirs with capacities above 400 liters. Standard IBC containers or similar rigid tanks are very bulky even when empty. As a rough logistics estimate, a standard 13.6 m semi-trailer can typically carry approximately 26 empty IBC containers per layer. If they can be safely double-stacked, 200 units of 1,000L IBC containers alone would still require approximately 4 full truckloads; without double-stacking, the same quantity may require around 8 truckloads. This does not yet include the additional 600 smaller reservoirs, storage space between deployments, handling equipment, or distribution across multiple city locations.

By contrast, TREEIB® bags are flexible, low-profile irrigation reservoirs that can be folded or rolled when empty. This substantially reduces storage volume, transport costs, warehouse requirements, and on-site handling complexity. For municipal contractors working across many urban locations, this is not only a convenience issue: storage and logistics directly affect operational cost, deployment speed, safety, and the practical feasibility of repeated seasonal use.
